Allegretto Wave by Wavefront

We are proud to offer wavefront optimized LASIK, the newest and latest generation of laser technology, at our practice. This ultra-precise treatment involves very few risks, and is considered one of the safest forms of laser eye surgery. Dr. William Columbus uses the Allegretto Wave™ laser to correct vision problems including hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism, as well as more complex issues that cannot be corrected with traditional LASIK. We offer wavefront optimized LASIK to greater Philadelphia residents who want advanced technology and superb results. The features & benefits of the Allegretto Wave laser are the following:

Wavefront Optimization Technology

One of the most innovative features of the Allegretto is it delivers a wavefront optimization treatment. Allegretto Wave’s revolutionary approach to laser vision correction minimizes problems associated with older generation lasers, such as night vision reduction, glare, and halos. The Allegretto is the only laser system that specifically designs treatment so as to preserve the most normal curvature characteristics (and thereby optimize visual quality) as a consequence of treatment.

In earlier laser systems (treating nearsightedness), the optical zone had an abrupt upward peripheral edge, causing unwanted side effects like poor night vision, glare, and halos . The Allegretto Wave is able to produce the largest available optical zone resulting in better night vision and glare control. The Allegretto Wave sends extra pulses to the peripheral cornea area in order to flatten that area thus eliminating the upward edge seen with older lasers. In this manner, the spherical shape of the cornea is preserved to a degree that older generation lasers simply could not achieve virtually reducing significantly glare and night vision problems associated with older lasers.

The illustration below demonstrates how Allegretto wavefront optimization works:

how wavefront works

The Allegretto system applies extra pulses to the peripheral cornea to preserve the naturally aspheric shape of the cornea to a degree that older lasers simply could not achieve. This compensation produces a smooth, cleanly sculpted optical surface and pristine image quality. A good analogy here would be to compare the image quality produced by the lens of a small consumer camera (think “older” laser treatments) to that produced by a high-grade professional camera lens ( think “new” wavefront optimized treatments).

The Allegretto Wave uses a wavefront optimized custom treatment that is adjusted to the patient’s individual corneal curvature to form the basis for the marketing claims of “high definition vision.” Wavefront optimized LASIK is the customized approach for our patients' unique needs.

Flying Spot Technology

The Allegretto has the most advanced laser technology to reshape the curvature of your cornea. Using a small 0.9mm diameter spot laser beam, the outcomes are excellent with sharper visions and also more accurate than older broad beam laser technology. Running at 400 hertz speed, treatment times are reduced by 50% than older technology resulting in less enhancement rates.

Active Tracking Technology

With older generation lasers, if a patient moved the eye during a laser treatment the treatment had to be stopped and interrupted & the laser re-centered on the pupil. The Allegretto utilizes an active tracker that follows your pupil if you move your eye. With active tracking technology the laser treatment is continuous and uninterrupted resulting in better outcomes & accuracy as well as eliminating the risk of a decentered treatment as a potential complication.

Allegretto Wave™ Results

Using the Allegretto Wave™ laser, over 95 percent of patients achieve 20/20 vision. Also 50 to 75 percent of patients achieve 20/15 vision post-surgery, which is considered better than 20/20 vision. The need for a secondary enhancement treatment only occurs in 1 to 2 percent of patients. This procedure is fast and safe, with few side effects and minimal downtime.

Dr. Columbus and his entire staff were professional from the beginning! He listened to all of my questions and concerns about the procedure and answered them completely. The surgery itself was also successful, and despite my vision being extremely poor, I am now able to see nearly 20/20. Ryan J.
