ANNOUNCER: Well believe it or not, some of us may be able to delay those reading glasses thanks to a new laser that can correct the problem in about a second. I don’t know, Jill that sounds kind of hard to believe.
JILL: You know, the same thing crossed my mind but I did get to see it done this afternoon. Now a number of people from our area are taking advantage of a new laser treatment and believe it or not, it requires no cuts. I got to watch a patient have it done at the First Union Arena today.
Michael Fung of Scranton is far sighted. He's preparing to have a new laser procedure that requires no cuts, no touch, to correct his far sightedness. He told me he was bored taking his glasses on and off.
MR. MICHAEL FUNG: I look on the newspaper, I saw him, and I said that's a good price for me now and I try to do. And I do surgery for my eyes.
JILL: Dr. Bill Columbus will perform the surgery. This ophthalmologist says many patients want a less invasive procedure to correct their eyesight. Government studies show no cut means little chance of infection or vision loss.
DR. COLUMBUS: The ideal candidate is somebody 40 years of age or older with far sightedness and are dependent on bifocals or reading glasses.
JILL: This picture shows how the laser spots are applied to the outside of the cornea. Columbus says that that impressed one patient who was blind in one eyes. He was afraid an invasive procedure could impair his good eye.
DR. COLUMBUS: He elected to have this done and right now he's 20/20 for distance and reading without classes. He's ecstatic.
JILL: We watched Michael Fung's surgery. It's done in just seconds.
DR. COLUMBUS: Complete.
JILL: A few minutes later Fung is looking at a menu and able to make out some of the words.
MR. FUNG: Dollars, bacon, dollars, cranberry, and salad, - -.
JILL: That's just with one eye. Michael Fung will have his other eye done tomorrow at the Women's Show at the First Union Arena, and Dr. Columbus will be there doing the demonstrations all weekend, so that's quite a sight.
ANNOUNCER: Well how long does that last?
JILL: Well it's interesting because all these laser procedures are still relatively new. The government researchers say that those being treated for far sightedness will probably have to have some touchup later on down the line.
ANNOUNCER: And it doesn't look like there is a lot of recovery either. He was reading already for you.
JILL: He was, he was reading. But see, that was because there was no cut, which meant there was—that lowers your risk of infection. Yeah, so it was really interesting. His eye will be dry. He'll keep using drops. But okay.
