Skin Care and LASIK in Philadelphia and Wilkes-Barre — Perfection Lasers

Laser Hair Removal in Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Wilkes-Barre

Most people don't realize practically their entire body is covered with hair. For the most part, it is light and almost imperceptible. However, when darker, coarser hair appears in places such as the face, neck, abdomen, breasts, legs, or underarms in women, or on the shoulders, chest, and back in men, it may be time to consider hair removal with the Lumenis EpiLight® laser. At Perfection Lasers, Dr. Columbus offers laser hair removal procedures for his patients, many of whom come from Philadelphia, Lancaster, Wilkes-Barre, and nearby communities to make improvements to their appearance. Please contact our office today to schedule an appointment.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Traditionally, dealing with unwanted hair has involved painful and inconvenient procedures such as plucking, waxing, and chemical depilatories. However, these remedies provide only short-term solutions and do not prevent hair from growing back. On the other hand, electrolysis, a long-term solution, is time-consuming and expensive and can also be quite painful.

Laser hair removal at our practice serving the Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Wilkes-Barre areas offers a more effective solution. At Perfection Lasers, we use the Lumenis EpiLight® laser, a state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove unwanted hair more quickly, comfortably, and reliably than other methods. Because the light emitted by the laser is absorbed by the pigment in hair follicles, it prevents hair from regrowing by heating the follicle to the point where growth is impeded. This allows for longer-lasting results, while the actual procedure is shorter than other hair removal procedures.

The Laser Hair Removal Procedure

The Lumenis EpiLight® laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles. The follicles are targeted with precise pulses of the laser, which last just long enough to heat them to the point where no regrowth is possible, while great care is taken to keep any skin from burning. One advantage of the laser hair removal treatment offered at our Philadelphia, Wilkes-Barre, and Lancaster-area practice is its ability to treat large areas simultaneously, which greatly reduces treatment time for areas such as the legs or back.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Hair Removal

The Lumenis EpiLight® laser hair removal system offered to our Lancaster, Wilkes-Barre, and Philadelphia patients is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted hair almost anywhere on the body. Before deciding if it is right for you, you can learn about various aspects of laser hair removal by reviewing these frequently asked questions regarding the procedure.

Does laser hair removal permanently remove hair?

Yes. In 90 percent of individuals, the treatment produces permanent results. The procedure works most effectively on light brown to black hair. Blond, gray, and some red hair does not contain enough melanin to absorb the laser light effectively. Most clients will lose 20 percent to 30 percent of the hair targeted for removal with each treatment.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

Hair grows in continuous cycles. The growth phase of the hair follicle is called an anagen; anagen hairs are targeted for laser hair removal because it is in this phase that the greatest amount of melanin is stored in the follicle. Scientific studies have shown that up to 20 percent to 30 percent of the hair on any area of the body at a given time are anagen hairs. Because only anagen hairs are affected by the laser, most patients will be required to undergo a minimum of five to six sessions in four-to-six-week intervals for the best results. Additional sessions of laser hair removal at our offices, located in the Wilkes-Barre, Philadelphia, and Lancaster areas, may be necessary. Finer hair and darker-skinned patients may require six to eight treatments.

What areas of the body can be treated with laser hair removal?

All areas of the body can be treated except for the area around the eye. The most important factor for laser hair removal, however, is how dark and coarse the targeted hair is.

How should I prepare for laser hair removal?

There are several things that we advise our patients to do before beginning laser hair removal treatment:

  • Try to avoid sun exposure. Recent tanning reduces the effectiveness of the procedure.
  • Do not wax, pluck, or receive electrolysis to any hairs within four weeks of your scheduled procedure. The presence of hair is essential to having successful laser hair removal.
  • If you suffer from cold sores often and are having the area around your mouth treated, you will need to get a prescription for Acyclovir or Zovirax and take as directed by your technician. These cold sore medications are usually taken two days before and three days after your treatment.
  • After your procedure, you may want to apply sunburn lotion or aloe to the treated areas, as they will feel hot for several days.

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

If you have hair that is light brown to black, you are a candidate for laser hair removal. Most patients who choose to undergo the procedure do so because they recognize how different their lives will be when they are free of unwanted hair. We advise our patients to consult with Dr. Columbus before deciding whether laser hair removal is for them.
